For over 20 years, the annual Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Pow Wow has offered visitors the opportunity to observe and experience traditional Native American dress, dancing, drumming, chanting, cuisine, and crafts. Pow Wows have evolved from intimate tribal gatherings to public celebrations focused on culturally rich events.
The Pow Wow officially begins with the lighting of the sacred fire that burns throughout the weekend plus the grand entry of dancers. Each style requires distinct dance steps and techniques, all complimenting the dancer’s movements. Age-group categories are in place for the dance styles, ranging from juniors aged 6-11 to platinum for age 65 and over. Upwards of 500 dancers typically take part in the this traditional dance at the Pow Wow.
