About Nectar & Thorns: A Love Story is a memory play about love, war, and healing. Placed in the summer of 1978, the play follows Joe Modders, a 19 year old home from his freshman year of college. He is the sole employee of the Merrinsville Historical Village in rural “Up North” Michigan. Mia and Maisy, 17 and 18 years old, arrive from downstate. They are refugees from war-torn Vietnam. Maisy is spirited and sarcastic. Mia is gentle and often withdrawn. Joe is smitten. The long summer days will act as a salve, drawing out emotions that threaten the fragile world the three have slowly built in the heat and haze of that long ago summer.
The fragile unfolding love and the mysterious haunts from the past are captured in original music by Michelle Lucchesi, artistic director of Blush Theater Company and owner of My Turn Performing Arts Collective LLC, along with Eli Lucchesi. The musical overture features choreography and dance by Kathryn Zettel, Alma College graduate in dance.
